10 Facts You Didn’t Know About The Taiji Dolphin Slaughter

Alexandra Piotrowski
January 25, 2014

RYOT has been covering this year’s dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan for the last week, and the response from you guys has been overwhelming. The majority of you feel the same way we do: really, really upset.

When emotions are running as hot as they are now, the most important thing is to do is be informed enough to take the right steps toward making real change. If you’re at all interested in the dolphin slaughter, you need to know these ten facts about it:

1. The dolphin slaughter isn’t actually a tradition.

Proponents of the practice are quick to call it a “cultural tradition,” but the practice of en masse dolphin killing truly started when the motorboat engine was invented and adopted into the mainstream. “This is like one generation, and that’s not ‘traditional,’” says Lincoln O’Barry of the Dolphin Project. “[The Japanese] could go kill with traditional whaling and go in big 20 man canoes and paddle out and kill a whale, but they’d never slaughter 100s of dolphins before.”

2. . . . But even if it were a tradition, it could change.

The Soloman Islands are one of few remaining indigenous and tribal areas on Earth, and they used to hunt dolphins for food and cultural reasons. When O’Barry visited them, they were using dolphin teeth as currency. After several months of living with the native people, O’Barry was able to educate them about dolphin conservation enough for them to alter their practices. “They stopped after a thousand years of tradition. It shows people can change.”

3. The entire local fishing industry isn’t based on the dolphin slaughter.

Taiji’s fishing industry isn’t entire contingent on the relative success of the dolphin slaughter. Stopping the slaughter would put “50 people out of business,” says O’Barry. While 50 out of 300 is still a considerable percentage, those 50 happen to be the richest people in the small town who make most of their profits specifically from the slaughter. ”There are 300 other fishermen in Taiji that fish for other things, not dolphins.”

4. The highly lucrative dolphin captivity industry is truly what motivates the slaughter.

“A dead dolphin… is worth about $500 in meat. A wild dolphin,” like those captured in Taiji during the slaughter, “to keep in an aquarium alive can be worth over $130,000.”

5. A small group of people, not the entire country of Japan, is responsible. [But the nation of Japan does nothing... doing nothing condones behavior. And this, Japan in whole, is the neck that needs to be squeezed. This weak, flaccid, semi-apologetic point is irrelevant. - Bryan]

Many Japanese citizens aren’t informed of the practice, motivation and effects of the dolphin slaughter [People make a choice to either be ignorant or informed. Again... no excuse. The calendar reads 2014; we now have tools like the internet - there is no longer any excuse for ignorance. - Bryan] — not even the people in Taiji. “We printed copies of The Cove in Japanese, and actually put them in every mail slot in every house in Taiji,” O’Barry says of Dolphin Project’s on-the-ground efforts to change this horrific practice. “I would personally relate the numbers of slaughtered dolphins dropping to this.”

6. The dolphin slaughter isn’t in the best interest of the Japanese.

Aside from a small group that profits immensely from the practice, most Japanese people don’t benefit at all from it. “No one in Japan mentions the word ‘mercury,’” laments O’Barry. Dolphin meat has some of the highest concentrations of the element, and consuming it can lead to severe neurological problems, from migraines to impaired motor skills. [How sad is the reality that in order to get anyone to give a shit about something it must be put forth in a light that that something is detrimental to people? As if people were the only beings on this planet. - Bryan]

7. The Japanese are also taking action against the slaughter.

2013 was the first year there was a Japanese activist standing up in protest at the cove. “This is about identifying and showing that it’s not all Japanese people,” says Lincoln. “There was a lot of anti-Japanese sentiment during the big whaling movement in the 1970s. All that really accomplished was that Japanese-American kids would get beat up on the playground. You can’t boycott a race of people just because of what a handful of people are doing in Taiji. That’s insane.” [I wouldn't equate one Japanese activist's presence as the Japanese taking action... that paints a picture that there is a Japanese movement that is actively opposing the slaughter in Taiji - one person? No, by and large the Japanese are doing NOTHING. - Bryan]

8. Less dolphins are being killed each year, thanks to awareness and global pressure.

In 2009, 2,500 dolphins were slaughtered. In 2010, 2,000. In 2012, only 800 were killed. That’s still 800 too many, but it proves that change can happen when passionate people take action.

9. The way to sustain change is by changing hearts and minds.

Getting mad doesn’t solve anything, and blaming a group of people doesn’t help either. The methods that have worked over the years and reduced the number of murdered dolphins are education and communication. O’Barry tells a powerful story about a Taiji dolphin hunter he knew: “There was a 3rd generation dolphin hunter that one day had a moment of epiphany that he couldn’t do it anymore. He’s now converted his dolphin hunting boat into a dolphin watching boat.”

10. You’re not powerless in this situation.

From signing petitions to sharing the facts on social media, there is a lot that you can do to help change this situation. The strongest weapon you have is your voice — use it to speak out against this atrocity and inspire change. [Your voice is not enough in this situation. Sure, spreading the word and liking a page is great and all... but, the greatest weapon you have is your voice coupled with your money - stop buying anything made in Japan... this pressure, if known why it is applied, will have the desired effect. - Bryan]

How YOU can help:

All the silly petitions, phone calls, tweets, et al, in the world does NOT compare to the power of money. If enough people simply began to use their money diligently by not buying anything associated with the nation of Japan this would end. Simply put, money talks. Don't just bark... bite too.

The Japanese Dolphin Slaughter Continues...

An entire pod of 60-65 Striped dolphins was completely annihilated this morning in Taiji's killing cove. — at Taiji Japan.
Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians Page (official)
January 28, 2014 0159PST

It was nothing short of a horror movie this morning in Taiji. The killing cove was a bright crimson blood bath after an entire family of 60-65 Striped dolphins were savagely murdered.

This morning the Striped dolphin pod was found by the killers at approximately 8am and by 9:30am the pod was netted into the confined space of the cove. The dolphin killers pushed a majority of the dolphins under the tarps and began to slaughter one by one. While the sound of thrashing was heard from the shore and the cove water turned red, 5 dolphins remained swimming only feet from the crime scene. Panicked from the sight and sound of their family murdered in front of them, those dolphins became injured, entangled in nets, and spy hopped out of the water to beg for mercy. Their fight and pleas fell on deaf ears as the killers ruthlessly murdered them in the same horrific manner the dolphins witnessed only minutes before.

By the end of the morning, an entire family of 60-65 Striped dolphins, that included babies and juveniles, was nothing more than slabs of meat loaded onto skiffs and used as seats for the killers on their way to the butcher house.

Fullerton Police murder man on camera and walk free...

"You see my fists? They're getting ready to fuck you up."
Never mind the bashed face and the details of his injuries; the police (and court) say Kelly Thomas died from heart problems.

Sometimes, like now, late is better than never I suppose... so...

In more news from around this police state:

Fullerton [California] police officers that were involved in beating a homeless man into a coma in July 2011, Kelly Thomas, who later died of his injuries, have been acquitted of all charges... for now. The FBI is currently reviewing the case and a retrial outside of the area should take place. All the grisly details you need may be found in the videos below.

Please visit the Facebook page for Kelly Thomas here.

The two following videos provide video and audio of the assault of these thugs hiding behind badges:

"Is he still breathing?"
"Looks like it ***."
"***it looks like he's still going up and down..."
"They hit him, they hit him in his head."
"He hit his head."
"He got facial injuries ***."
"... I got the end of my taser and I probably... I just start smashing his face to hell."

To see just what injuries these pigs inflicted upon Kelly please watch the following video:

Cicinelli admitted to using the ass end of his taser to fellow officers. Does the injuries and references to brain death have anything remotely to do with a heart issue? No.

And what did the judge that presided over the case say about this? He said that all of us are using our hearts when reviewing the facts here and not our heads. I am by no means a humanitarian... but this judge should be thrown out on his ass.

I, personally, have been jumped while completely intoxicated, by 3-5 guys... repeated kicked while on the ground (including kicks to the face and head), and looked nothing like Kelly Thomas.

Another thing I can attest to is the treatment of the homeless; at one time in my life (thankfully a long time ago) I spent a few months living out of my car... a low I never want to revisit... and I was two cities away from Fullerton. Cops would threaten and intimidate you as if it were a past time. I've seen this first hand and been the focus of it as well on one occasion. A close friend of mine, rather recently, was pulled over for no reason, and threatened by police in Costa Mesa, CA. My friend stated to his luck there was road work and he was within visual sight of the CalTrans workers... he sincerely believes that if they had him on a dark road his night would have went much differently... for questioning them about why they pulled him over to begin with. I guess we are all pretty cool with thugs pulling us over for no reason and demanding to know where we have come from and to where we are heading (which is none of their fucking business). What was once known elsewhere as papers is now a drivers license for the unfortunate target of bored police... police whose departments also have the pressure of city officials to drum up money via court fees, fines, etc.

Notice how Ramos from the start is swinging his night stick...

Even a moron can see that Ramos has an aggressive, gamey, and sarcastic stance from the start. Was a crime committed - was there any evidence - was there any reason for the bullshit and games to ensue rather than simply showing up and telling Kelly to take a hike? No.

If you and I were to get into a fist fight and I beat you into a coma, in which you later died due to your injuries, you better fucking bet that I would be tried for murder or manslaughter. These individuals beat a man to death because he didn't put his hands behind his back after pleading that he could not breath. What's more, their own dialogue while on the scene attests to the utter lack of control they have over their own behavior - beginning with Ramos' tough guy, thug, douche with a badge interaction with Thomas all the way to Cicinelli's audio illustrating a lack of any form of controlled response. The jurors should be ashamed of themselves. The judge should be recalled. While murderers they are in my eyes, how even the most conservative person out there wouldn't hold them negligent is beyond me - yet negligence leads directly to manslaughter... which is my case and point.

Take another look at the murderers; look at how lifeless their eyes are. Manuel Ramos (L) and Jay Cicinelli (R). These two should be tossed into gen pop at a place like Folsom.

South African rhino poaching deaths nears 1,000 in 2013

Andrew Russel
January 15, 2014

Poachers are devastating one of the largest rhino populations in the world.

Thirty of the protected animals have been reportedly killed in South Africa in the past two weeks alone, their bodies found decaying with the horns removed.

The disturbing news comes on the heels of a Dec. 19 report by South Africa’s environment ministry that found 946 rhinos were killed last year – one of the worst years on record.

“It’s been a rate of almost three a day,” says Ernie Cooper, Director of TRAFFIC and Wildlife Trade for the World Wildlife Federation-Canada. “We expect the final report on the number of rhinos killed to be released soon. We have our fingers crossed that it doesn’t reach 1,000.”

According to the South African National Parks agency, 13 rhinos were killed in 2007, which exploded to 946 in 2013.

South Africa is home to the largest population of rhinos in the world thanks to successful conservation efforts. But a recent increase in demand for the coveted rhino horn – which can fetch $100,000 to $300,000 on the black market – has seen the number of rhinos killed in the area skyrocket.

The rhino horn has been used in the past as a treatment for disease in Chinese medicine, and has more recently become a status symbol of the upper class in Vietnam as a kind of cure-all remedy. Cooper says the demand for rhino horn is growing in the emerging economy of Vietnam as the middle class expands and residents have more disposable income.

The sharp increase of rhinos being killed since 2007 also coincided with a rumour that rhino horn had cured cancer in a unnamed Vietnamese politician.

The current approach to stopping the rhino slaughter involves three steps and the co-ordination of several government agencies in multiple countries.

“One is to stop the poaching, combat the illegal activity on the ground in South Africa. The second is to kill the demand in other countries, which is right now primarily in Vietnam. The other is to stop the transport of rhino horns in neighbouring countries like Mozambique,” Cooper said.

The rapid increase in the demand for the horn has led some conservationists to propose more radical ideas for saving Africa’s rhinos.

South Africa is another toilet on my shit list... right there along with China, Iceland, India, Japan, Norway, etc. There it is again too - Chinese "medicine". Uuugggghhhhhh....

Huntards are some of the most disgusting humans on the planet.

Ke$ha caught importing ivory

Just what the world needs more of - generic electronic music.

John R. Kennedy
January 13, 2014

Pop star Ke$ha — an outspoken animal rights [poser] — is under fire for bringing illegal ivory in the U.S.

The 26-year-old singer brought a “snuff bottle” made of elephant ivory into the country following a tour of Japan, according to a report by Radar.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security seized the contraband, valued at $500, on Aug. 27, 2012.

That same year, Ke$ha was named Humane Society International’s first global ambassador for animals.

“One of the main underlying sentiments of my music is to respect all living creatures just as they are,” she said in a Oct. 29, 2012 press release. “I believe that together, we can change laws that allow innocent animals to be unjustly mistreated and abused all over the world.”

In 1989, 115 countries agreed to ban the international trade of ivory.

Ke$ha has been a vocal opponent of shark finning, dogfighting and Canada’s annual seal hunt. She has also actively promoted the conservation of polar bears and preservation of coral reef.

It appears the “Die Young” singer simply made a mistake.

Humane Society of the United States vice president Michelle Cho told Radar Ke$ha was unaware the trinket she bought at a thrift shop was made of ivory.

“It is not uncommon for even the most dedicated animal lover to mistakenly buy ivory when they think it’s another material,” Cho is quoted as saying.

According to Cho, 35,000 African elephants were killed in 2013 for their tusks.

Ke$ha, whose full name is Kesha Sebert, is currently in an Illinois rehab facility.

For punishment she should sit and have to listen to her music on repeat.

Whale meat sold at Berlin 'Green Week'

The Local
January 23, 2013

Customs officials confiscated illegal whale meat which was being sold as marinated bite-sized snacks at Berlin's Green Week trade fair on Wednesday.

Custom officers came away with three kilos worth of Minke whale meat from a Norwegian stand at the event, after being tipped off by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation group (WDC) and the BZ newspaper.

Selling whale meat is banned in Germany, but Norway is one of the only countries in the world where it is allowed.

It appears the stand owners did not know this when they began offering the €2-snacks on Monday, served with a blueberry dip. “We are surprised that selling it is illegal here,” stand manager Arne Andreas Rød told the BZ newspaper.

Two hours after the WDC and BZ visited the stall, customs officials closed it down.

The case has been taken on by the state prosecutor's office who said that they were looking into an incident of “import, export, and sale” of meat.

If prosecuted and convicted, the stall-holders could face a fine and imprisonment of up to five years.

Whale protection activists criticized the sale. “Norway has broken numerous laws,” said Astrid Fuchs from the WDC.

"We have good laws in Europe to protect whales and dolphins, but they are often not implemented."

She told The Local: "I was really surprised to find it on sale. The environment ministry couldn't believe it either. It is really a scandal because people shouldn't be able to bring it through customs."

Green Week takes place each year in Berlin and attracts tens of thousands of visitors.

I say throw the damn book at them - make an example out of these moron Norwegians. Hey Norway, why not join us in the year 2014?

Japanese dolphin hunt continues as fleet atempts to herd another pod

Bottlenose Dolphins in Taji, Japan January 21, 2014

Two wild orcas have been captured by hunters, and will be displayed at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

White Sphere, the Russian company behind this, are just looking to make a fast buck from the tourists who will be descending on to Sochi during the Games. All at the expense of these beautiful creatures who have been stolen from their ocean home.

The mammals, which can grow up to 22ft long and swim 100 miles a day, are set to be kept in a “small concrete tank” after a 4,614-mile flight from the far east of Russia. Animal experts say that transporting orcas causes them stress, that keeping them in captivity shortens their life and can even turn them “psychotic”.

Tell White Sphere not to display the wild orcas, and release them back into the ocean where they belong.

This isn’t the first time that the Sochi Winter Olympics has met controversy. Over 400,000 of us have already petitioned Coca Cola, as a sponsor of the Winter Olympics, to speak out on Russia’s brutal anti-gay laws.

The spotlight is now on Russia and these Games, and the International Olympic Committee can not afford more embarrassment. If we draw attention to White Sphere’s despicable behaviour now, just 3 weeks before the Games begin, there’s more chance that we can win this.

Demand that White Sphere drops its plan to display the orcas, and return them to the wild

The human race is, by and large, in my opinion, a fucking cancer on this planet. No stone is left unturned in our search to satiate our fucking greed. Nothing is universally sacred; not each other or anything else... the only thing sacred to the vast majority of homo sapiens is their greed.

Humanity is like an arm or leg with gangrene; there may be some good tissue on there still, but it just isn't enough... the destruction wrought by the gangrene is just too much; the limb must be amputated.

Replace gangrene with greed, apathety, professed ignorance, et al.

Updated: Dolphins await their fate after being rounded up in Japanese cove

Do animals have feelings?

Yesterday (January 23 in Japan) these "fishermen" killed an entire family of striped dolphins.

The following is taken from the Cove Guardian Facebook page:
Despite worldwide media attention on Japan to stop the heinous slaughter of dolphins and small whales, Taiji continues to kill dolphins.

All 12 killing boats left Taiji harbor this morning and in less than 2 hours they had discovered a pod of Striped dolphins just south of Taiji.

The pod was driven by all 12 killing boats and forced into the shallow water of the cove. After being netted and corralled into the tiny confines of the killing cove, the killers draped a second net pulling the dolphins farther in under the tarps. As we continued to live stream the process, killers pushed the pod quickly under tarps and out of our sight. Just another work day for these barbarians and just another day hiding their “culture and tradition”.

No lives were spared today as all 25-28 Striped dolphins were callously murdered under the large tarps that lined the shore of the killing cove. The bodies were thrown onto a small skiff and buried under a large silver tarp to cover the bloodshed. Delivered to the butcher house and processed for meat for human consumption.
A complete family unit was obliterated this morning in the cove.
Killers rapidly try to cover the bodies that were tossed onto the skiff for transfer to the butcher house.
Dolphin killers use their body weight to hold tarp down over the dead Striped dolphin carcasses.
All 12 killing boats left Taiji harbor this morning
The Striped pod was driven toward Taiji within two hours.
The killers used banger poles and slap paddles to manipulate the pod toward the killing cove.
The entire pod of 25-28 Striped dolphins were slaughtered for human consumption.
Once netted into the killing cove, the pod was rushed to ward the killing shore. No lives were spared.

GOP Immigration Plans Could Grant Amnesty to up to 6.5 Million

January 15, 2014

An estimated 6.5 million illegal aliens could receive amnesty under ideas being publicly shared by House Republican leaders, according to a nonpartisan research group. The National Foundation for American Policy based its estimate mostly on statements made by House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.).

The foundation's report estimates that 3.1-4.4 million illegal aliens would receive green cards because they're parents of children who are U.S. citizens. While Rep. Goodlatte has said he does not support a special path to citizenship for illegal aliens, he does support allowing them to gain citizenship through existing immigration programs. Existing law grants an unlimited number of green cards to parents of U.S. citizens.

The foundation also determined that another 600,000 illegal aliens could receive green cards because they're married to a U.S. citizen - another category that grants an unlimited number of green cards each year.

Finally, the foundation assumed that the House would pass an amnesty bill granting a path to citizenship to illegal aliens who were brought to the United States as children, adding another 800,000 to 1.5 million to the total. The Migration Policy Institute, however, estimates that the total number of "Dreamers" could be around 2.1 million.

Estimates of the total illegal-alien population range from 11 to more than 20 million currently residing in the United States. The most recent estimate from the Department of Homeland Security set the illegal-alien population at 11.5 million, so the foundation's estimate of the GOP plan would legalize more than half.

For more on this story, see the New York Times.
